Server Change

Server Switch FAQ

Why are you changing servers?

This is an old Windows NT server. Microsoft discontinued support for NT at the end of 2004 - we are no longer able to get software and security updates. The server itself is getting old and replacement parts are difficult to find. To make sure your web site stays on-line with the latest security measures and reliability we need to replace the server.

How long before the server is changed?

We have scheduled July 1, 2008 as the date to transfer remaining sites and shut the old server down. We can assist you in the transition including transferring your site before that date.

Why can't you just transfer my existing site to the new server?

If you received an email or letter from us your web site may use features put in by Microsoft Frontpage that are not compatible with newer servers. Microsoft discontinued these features, along with the Frontpage software, in 2006. If we just transferred your site to the new server functions that were unique to FrontPage that were only supported by older, discontinued Windows servers would not work.

We want your site to be able to continue to operate and meet your needs so are providing a transition period. Our support team will help you with the transition, call (503)206-8111 or email support@web-ster.com.

What is on my site that will fail?

Not all sites will have problems with the transition. Microsoft used functions, "components" or "webbots" that are not supported in newer servers. In addition support for these functions is being removed from newer web browsers. Your customers may not be able to use some of these features in the future no mater what server we have!

More information on FrontPage components can be found at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/frontpage/HP010337481033.aspx.

What do I need to change on my site?

You need to replace sections that use FrontPage browse-time components or webbots. See http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/frontpage/HP010337481033.aspx. for more information on these components.

The most common webbot used is a contact page form. This allows the setup of a form page that sends the information to the site owner when submitted. The contact function will not work when the site is on newer web servers. We provide an alternative called a Form Handler that uses standard web form codes instead of FrontPage webbots. http://support.web-ster.com/tutorials/webdesign/formhandlers/ has more information and examples of how to use our Form Handler.

Can I still use FrontPage to edit my site?

Yes, you just can't use FrontPage browse-time components.

Web site editors that do not have this issue include:

Professional Level
Microsoft Expression (Microsoft FrontPage replacement)
Adobe Dreamweaver

Free
Nvu Mozilla
RedDwarf

Can you fix my site?

Sorry, we can help you in the transition with support on the server differences. However, your web site is unique to you so we cannot write it.
