Hub or Switch

Step 1: Release IP Address

Before multiple computers can be connected to Web-ster DSL through a switch, you must first release the IP addresses on all computers that have previously been connected to DSL.

Step 2: Disconnect Ethernet Cable

The Ethernet cable runs from your modem to your computer. Unplug the Ethernet cable from the modem.

Step 3: Shut Down Computers

After you have unplugged the Ethernet cable, shut down all computers.

Step 4: Connect Modem to the Hub/Switch

Using an Ethernet cable, connect your modem to the hub or switch.

Note: Many hubs and switches have ports labeled “uplink” or “WAN” that are designated for receiving Ethernet cable from modems. Please check the instructions included with your hub/switch to determine the correct place to connect your modem Ethernet cable.

Step 5: Connect Hub/Switch to Power Source

Plug the hub or switch into the power source. Check to make sure the power light is illuminated. If you experience technical problems with the hub or switch, please contact the manufacturer.

Step 6: Connect Computers to the Hub/Switch

Use Ethernet cables to connect all computers to ports in the hub or switch.

Step 7:  Turn on All Computers

After all hardware has been connected, double-check to make sure all connections are secure. Turn on all computers and then go to step 8, below.

Step 8: Verify DSL Connection

With your computers turned on, please click Start and then follow steps A through D, below.

Step A

Click Run.

Step B

In the Open: field, type command and then press Enter.

Step C

The flashing cursor appears in the MS prompt window.

If you are a Windows ME, Windows 2000, or Windows XP user, please type ipconfig/  renew and then press Enter.

If you are a Windows 98 user, please type ipconfig/  renew_all and press Enter.

Step D

If Web-ster DSL is installed correctly, you will see an IP address with a series of numbers, starting with the following: 65.xxx.xxx.xxx

If the IP number begins with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx, your computer has not received an IP address from Web-ster. Please complete steps 1 through 3 (above) again, and then check that the modem’s ENET light displays a solid light.

If your computer displays the correct IP address, you may proceed with installation of Web-ster software.
