If none of the computers in your network are currently using DSL, skip to Step 3.

Step 1: Release IP Address
Before multiple computers can be connected to Web-ster DSL through a router, you must first release the IP addresses on all computers that have previously been connected to DSL.

Windows 95/98 - Instructions

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Run.
  3. In the Open: field, type winipcfg and then click OK.
  4. Select your network card from the drop-down menu. (If your PPP adapter is currently selected, select your network adapter instead.)
  5. Click the Release button. You should see the IP Address go from a 65.xxx.xxx.xxx address to 0.0.0.0.
  6. Disconnect your computer from the DSL modem, and then plug in the router.

Windows XP/2000 - Instructions

1. Click your Start button.
2. Click Run. In the Open: field, type cmd and click OK.

3. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /release. The IP address should display as 0.0.0.0.
4. Disconnect the computer from the DSL modem, and then plug in your router.

Step 2: Disconnect Ethernet Cable

Step 4: Connect the Modem to the Router
Using an Ethernet cable, connect your modem to the router.
Note: Many routers have ports labeled "uplink" or "WAN" that are designated for receiving Ethernet cable from modems. Please check the instructions included with your router to determine the proper place to connect your modem Ethernet cable.

Step 5: Connect the Router to Power Source
Plug the router into the power source and then check to make sure the power light is illuminated. If you experience technical problems with the router, please contact the manufacturer of the router.

Step 6: Connect Computers to the Router
Connect all computers to ports in the router. You can use up to 328 feet of Ethernet cable.

Step 7: Turn on All Computers
When all hardware has been connected, double-check to make sure all connections are secure. Turn on all computers and proceed to Step 8, below.

Step 8: Verify DSL Connection
With your computers turned on, please click Start and follow steps A through D, below.

Step A
Click Run.

Step B
In the Open: field, type command and then press Enter.

Step C
A flashing cursor appears in the MS prompt window.
If you are a Windows ME, Widows 2000, or Windows XP user, please type IPconfig/ renew and then press Enter.

If you are a Windows 98 user, please type ipconfig/ renew_all and then press Enter.

Step D
If Web-ster DSL is installed correctly, you see an IP address with a series of numbers starting with the following: 65.xxx.xxx.xxx

If the IP number begins with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx, your computer has not received an IP address from Web-ster. Please complete steps 1 through 3 (above) again, and then check that the modem's ENET light displays a solid light.

If your computer displays the correct IP address, you may proceed with installation of Web-ster software.
